ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orange County School Board on Tuesday evening approved a policy banning students from using their cell phones while attending classes.

Per the policy, students must keep their phones shut off and concealed during the school day, except in cases of an emergency or when a student needs to monitor a health condition.

District 3 board member Alicia Farrant cited an example of one school seeing success after the principal implemented a zero tolerance cell phone policy.

“We are having zero cell phone tolerance at all,” Farrant said. “It stays in the backpack. They have seen a huge transformation in their schools. Discipline is way down. They don’t have much of a problem with that.”

The policy, which includes smartwatches and ear buds, goes into effect with the start of the upcoming school year on Aug. 10.
