ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Orange County deputies fatally shot a man who ran at them while holding a knife early Saturday, according to Sheriff John Mina.

Deputies responded around 4:30 a.m. to the Intown Suites at Central Florida Parkway and South Orange Blossom Trail, where a woman had called 911 to report her boyfriend had a knife and was going to kill himself, Mina said in a video statement on social media.

When deputies encountered the man, who the post states was in his 40s, Mina said that he went back inside his room.

“Our deputies were in the parking lot attempting to get him to come out without the knife so they could get him the help that he needed. So after about 20 minutes of trying to get him to drop the knife and come out, the man ran out of the apartment holding a knife above his head, running straight towards our deputies in an attack-style posture. Several deputies fired their service weapons at the man,” Mina said, raising his arm in the video to depict the man’s alleged stance.

Deputies rendered aid until Orange County Fire Rescue arrived to take the man to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, the post states.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting before its findings are turned over to the State Attorney’s Office for review, then to the sheriff’s office for an internal investigation, according to Mina.

“There is body-worn camera video of the incident, which I have reviewed. We will release that within 30 days,” he said.

The deputies who fired their weapons are on temporary, paid administrative leave pending FDLE’s initial review, according to the post.

No other details have been shared or confirmed at the time of this report.
